The Date For The Georli/Pratar Merge Revealed, Once It Has No Issue The Main Merge Will Be Announced

The timetable for the final test of the merge is revealed on the Twitter handle of one of the Ethereum developers, Tim Beiko. Although he once released a breakdown of the event in the previous post filed by Cryptolifedigital.

After a series of the devnets, shadow forking and merges on the deprecated testnets. As reported by the Cryptolifedigital, a few weeks ago, the sepolia was transitioned to PoS this was after the merge has been run through the Ropsten testnet. Earlier on July 28th, the tenth shadow fork was successful even earlier than its timing.

In this case, Goerli and Prater will merge, but the resulting network will continue to be known as “Goerli” after the Merge.

The merge is different from the one that once happened in just two ways;

1. The node operators need to update both their consensus layer (CL) and Execution layer (EL) one after the other rather than either of the two.
2. The upgrade activates in two phases: named Bellatrix, at an epoch height on the beacon Chain and the second named Paris on hitting the Total Difficulty value on the EL.

As stated in the above analysis, the merge will happen in two ways, first with a network upgrade, Bellatrix, on the CLwhcih is initiated by an epoch height and then followed by the E-layer’s transition from PoW to PoS, Paris initiated by a particular Total Difficulty point called Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD).

As stated on the official blog: ”the Bellatrix upgrade is slated to occur on August 4th, 2022 at exactly 12:24 pm UTC on reaching the epoch 112260 while Paris, the execution layer’s portion of the transition will be triggered on reaching the TTD of 10790000 on Georli between August 6^th – August 12^th, 2022.

The consensus-critical changes for the merge are in two places which include;

1. The consensus layer changes, under the Bellatrix directory of the consensus-space repository
2. The EL changes, under the Paris spec in the execution-space repository.

As stated in the blog post, the time for the main merge is not yet stated until the Georli/Pratar merge has no issues. If otherwise, the issue must be addressed before continuing with the deployment process, and following this the estimated date for the merge will be announced.
