Cardano is entering one of the most important stages in its history as the consensus team begins targeted troubleshooting for Ouroboros Leios, the ambitious scalability upgrade expected to redefine the network’s performance capabilities. Following the high profile October 2025 demonstration, which surfaced temporary congestion and bufferbloat under heavy load simulations, the team has formally tracked the issues and launched dedicated optimization efforts. These developments mark a pivotal step toward the projected Q1 2026 mainnet deployment.

Resolving Bufferbloat and Strengthening Node Performance

During the October demo, Cardano engineers pushed Leios to extreme conditions to test its limits. The resulting latency spikes, attributed to bufferbloat, highlighted the need for smarter resource allocation when processing large volumes of parallel blocks. The issue has now been recorded in a new GitHub thread, alongside deeper work on LSM tree optimizations designed to enhance the efficiency of the cardano node.

These improvements ensure the node can handle Leios’ unique structure of input, endorsement and ranking blocks without creating bottlenecks. By resolving these performance gaps early, the team is aiming for a smooth transition into the next era of high throughput while maintaining the network’s trademark stability.

Delivering True Parallelism and Mass Scalability

Leios is designed to introduce parallel block processing for the first time in Cardano’s history, allowing transactions to be validated and ordered across multiple streams simultaneously. This architecture is expected to unlock more than 1,000 transactions per second for typical operations, and even higher for lightweight transfers.

Early simulations have already demonstrated promising results, reaching 200 TPS for average transactions and hitting 1,000 TPS in optimized lightweight configurations. With further refinements, the system is projected to scale toward 11,000 TPS without compromising decentralization or network security.

Founder Charles Hoskinson has described the upcoming upgrade as a crowning achievement of more than a decade of research into secure and scalable proof of stake systems. He emphasized that Leios inherits the robust security guarantees of Ouroboros Praos while offering performance that may surpass even Solana’s bursts—without the historical downtime risk.

A Global Development Push Toward Q1 2026 Launch

Input Output Global is accelerating the rollout through its follow the sun development model, ensuring 24 hour progress cycles across global engineering teams. A new public dashboard will soon provide real time insights into milestones, testing phases and deployment readiness.

With phased activation planned to avoid disruptions, Ouroboros Leios is on track to become one of Cardano’s most transformative upgrades, setting the stage for enterprise scale adoption, advanced dApps and a new era of decentralized throughput.
